Many readers will find it strange that so many Black Opera Stars were able to dominate the opera stage during a period when Jim crow was the law of the land. Many African Americans singers chose opera because this was the only place where they could become leading stars and perform with Whites on stage. In spite of this, racism still played a dominate role in their careers. This feature will examine how many of these stars were able to overcome racism and continue to inspire many of us with their beautiful voices. When racism was to difficult to overcome, many left the country and trained in Europe before returning to America as super stars.
Many of these stars were not just entertainers, but social activist as well. This feature will also discuss how their social activism help create a more just society in America. You will be introduced to such super divas as Marian Anderson, (contralto), Kathleen Battle and Leontyne Price, (sopranos) and William Warfield and Paul Robeson,(baritones). Hopefully after listening to many of these artist, you will come away as a serious opera lovers.
