The late Bernie Hanighen collaborated with our birthday boy, the late Gordon Jenkins, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer on “When a Woman Loves a Man,” which brought the musical trio together in song in 1938. Lady Day, the late Billie Holiday, who took a song and truly made it her own, intones this emotional song.

Hanighen April 27, 1908, Omaha, Nebraska - October 19, 1976, New York, NY) is the songwriter who collaborated with Clarence Williams to transform Thelonious Monk's bop masterpiece "'Round About Midnight" into "'Round Midnight," a ballad standard in the vocal repertory for years.
