Newt Gingrich refers to President Obama as the Food Stamp president because more Blacks are relying on food stamps to feed their families. He stated that he would offer Black people jobs instead of food stamps. The coded message he is sending here is that Obama is putting Blacks on food stamps as oppose to creating jobs and opportunties and that some blacks would rather rely on food stamps rather than work. This type of race bating plays well among those on the far right because they have peddled this garbage for many years. Anyway, here are the facts: 45.8 million Americans are now receiving food stamps. The majority of the recipients are White not Black. The food stamps program has been increasing because many Americans have lost their jobs and can no longer afford to buy enough food to feed their families. Experts also pointed out that George W. Bush also expanded the program under his administration because he wanted to help more families who was having problems keeping food on the table. In summary, the food Stamp Program increased under both administrations. It has increase under the Obama Administration because we are experiencing the worst recession since the 1930 depression. The economic down turn started under the Bush Administration, not the Obama administration. So when you hear the GOP repeating this lie, just remind them about the facts. This kind of race bating will only consolidate Obama's base in the black community, further isolate the GOP, and deliver 90% of the Black vote to Obama again this year.
