Bio/ Reprinted from carmenbalthropin.com:Carmen Balthrop is an American soprano who has an astonishing range of repertoire from Baroque opera to contemporary song literature. She has appeared with most of the major opera companies in North America including The Metropolitan, Canadian, San Francisco, Dallas, Miami, Seattle, Houston and Florentine. European opera houses include Venice (Teatro La Fenice) and Spoleto, Italy, as well as Berlin (Teatro des Westens). Her orchestral appearances include oratorio and concert performances with the New York Philharmonic, National, Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Houston and Detroit symphonies. In great demand as a recitalist, she has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, as well as in Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, China and Mexico and the Bahamas. National Public Radio chose to air, on Christmas day, in the year of the Millenium, the live recording of her Christmas art song recital, performed at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.


Ms. Balthrop’s discography, found on the Deutsche Grammaphone, Elan, New World, and Fonit Cetra labels, includes the title roles of Scott Joplin's Treemonisha and Claudio Monteverdi's L’Incoronazione di Poppea. Her self-produced compact disc entitled The Art Of Christmas is available at amazon.com. and cdbaby.com. Professor of Voice in the School of Music at the University of Maryland, she is also a graduate of the school, and has been inducted into the University’s Alumni Hall of Fame, the Omicron Delta Honor Society, and is a recipient of the University of Maryland’s President’s “Model of Excellence” award. In addition to Ms. Balthrop’s ongoing collaboration with composer Leslie Burrs on his operas Vanqui and Transitions: Sung Stories, recent engagements include: a recital at the American Embassy in Moscow, Russia and a concert with the Smolny Church A Capella Chorus in St. Petersburg, Russia; the world premiere of the opera Free to Sing, commissioned by Strathmore Hall; the role of Lillie in the world premiere of composer Frank Proto’s opera Shadowboxer, The Story of Joe Louis at CSPAC; and her “Diva’s Night Out” at the The Rosslyn Spectrum Theater@Artisphere in Arlington, Virginia.

Ms. Balthrop regularly collaborates with living composers and several of her upcoming engagements include: a world premiere recital at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC of “A Modern Woman’s Life and Love”, a song cycle written for her by composer Robert Greenleaf; a recording of two Portuguese songs written for her by Chris Urquiaga; a performance of Hymn to Freedom by Leslie Adams at the African American Art Song Alliance conference in Urvine, California and more recitals in St. Petersburg, Russia.
