A native of Washington, D.C., bass Soloman Howard is in his third season of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. This season with WNO he appeared as the Lion in The Lion, the Unicorn, and Me; the Alcade of Hornachuelos in The Force of Destiny; and in Duffy's Cut as part of the American Opera Initiative. He will next be seen as Sarastro in The Magic Flute. This season he has also performed the role of Colline in La bohème at Opera North Carolina, and he recently made his Carnegie Hall debut as a soloist with the New York Oratorio Society in Mendelssohn's Die erste Walpurgisnacht. Last season at WNO, he appeared in the title role of the world premiere of Approaching Ali, as Joe in Show Boat, as Charon in the American Opera Initiative, and as Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni (mainstage and Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist performances). Other recent engagements include Washington Concert Opera's I masnadieri and Attila, his Central City Opera debut as Joe in Show Boat, Il Commendatore at Green Mountain Opera Festival, and performances as The Bonze in Madama Butterfly with PORTopera. His concert credits include Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass with the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, the Mozart Requiem at Washington National Cathedral, and many concerts with the Morgan State University Choir including the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess under the baton of Paul Freeman. He is a graduate of Morgan State University and the Manhattan School of Music. Upcoming appearances include debuts at the Metropolitan Opera and LA Opera.
